Bob Geldofs five-word shun of Russell Brand live on air shown in Dispatches doc
Footage has resurfaced of Sir Bob Geldof declaring Russell Brand a “c***” at the 2006 NME awards.
The clip of the awkward stand-off was included in a documentary on Channel 4, in which the 48-year-old comic was accused of rape, sexual assault and abuse.
The Grays-born A-lister was shown in the film hosting the NME awards and shaking the hand of Sir Bob as the Irish rocker joins him on the stage.
After taking over the lectern from a long-haired Brand, Sir Bob says into the microphone: “Russell Brand, what a c***”. The remark received whoops and laughs.
The social media star is at the centre of a storm of rape, sexual assault and abuse put forward by The Times, Sunday Times and Channel 4 Dispatches, all of which he denies.
The documentary, aired on September 16, includes claims from multiple women, who accuse him of committing a slew of sex crimes in the mid-noughties at the height of his fame.
Brand “absolutely refuted” the allegations, made by four women, and took to YouTube and X/Twitter to claim his innocence.
The investigative documentary shares the claims of one woman who alleges Mr Brand raped her in her home in LA.
Another claims that he sexually assaulted her when she was 16 and he was 31.
Brand is alleged by one victim to have “groomed” her, and was said to have opportunistically exploited his position as a celebrity whilst presenting TV programmes to pursue sexual relationships with young female colleagues.
Mr Brand took to social media to deny the allegations vehemently.
He said, in an impassioned video: “I’ve received two extremely disturbing letters, or a letter, and an email, one from a mainstream media TV company, one from a newspaper, listing a litany of extremely egregious and aggressive attacks, as well as some pretty stupid stuff like, my community festival should be stopped, that I shouldn’t be able to attack mainstream media narratives on this channel, but amidst this litany of astonishing, rather baroque attacks are some very serious allegations that I absolutely refute.
“These allegations pertain to the time when I was working in the mainstream, when I was in the newspapers all the time, when I was in the movies, and as I’ve written about extensively in my books, I was very very promiscuous.
“Now during that time of promiscuity, the relationships I had were absolutely, always consensual.”
He adds: “I was always transparent about that then, almost too transparent, and I’m being transparent about it now as well, and to see that transparency metastasized into something criminal, that I absolutely deny, makes me question, is there another agenda at play?”
