Well find you in their new screensaverClick to expand. A new study has found that when it comes to the way the UK is run, the Northern powerhouse just might be an economic model to imitate. The report shows that when it comes to the Norths economic strength, it comes close to matching the rest of the UK across almost every category. It also shows that if the North was to leave the EU, it might experience a smaller decline than other parts of the UK. The research was commissioned by the London School of Economics and London Business School and was carried out by the Centre for Economic Performance at the London School of Economics and London Business School. It looked at eight categories, including productivity, gross domestic product, unemployment, income growth, living standards and inequality. It found that, when it comes to the way the UK is run, the North comes close to matching the rest of the UK across almost every category. Among its findings, the North has the lowest cost of living and low corporate tax rates – making it attractive to multinationals. The research also found that, under the North Sea model, the Norths economy would be much more resilient to uncertainty when compared with its sister regions. The researchers also pointed out that Northern England and Scotland would have more fiscal control over their budgets and would be able to pursue a more effective and well-targeted investment agenda to increase productivity and economic growth. In terms of the future of the North, some of the scenarios suggest that the North is either one of the main drivers of economic growth in the UK or that it has some sort of fiscal bridge loan available if the UK as a whole enters recession. Other scenarios suggested that the North would be worse off than it is now in the event of a major economic shock, but it would still be a positive force, if a bit weaker, than it would be had it only been a part of the UK that left the EU.
