This post was created by a member of BuzzFeed Community, where anyone can post awesome lists and creations. In the past year Ive been fortunate enough to be part of an amazing community thats made a big impact on my life. Last month I was given the opportunity to join the team at Moxie. Im so blessed to be part of something so amazing and I cant wait to see where it takes me. For the past few years, one of the more notable projects to come out of the world of gaming has been the open-world RPG. The term has been thrown around a bit, but open-world is a popular one. Its almost sort of like saying a sandbox game. The idea is that the player can go anywhere they want and do anything. Recently, another term has been gaining some traction. The idea is the same: the player can go anywhere and everything can be explored. This term is being used to describe things like the new Star Citizen. Theres actually no such thing as an open world RPG. Im not even sure what the point of trying to make one, really. This isnt to take away from anybody elses hard work. This is just trying to offer my perspective and hopefully the perspective of more of other RPGers out there. In order to help me out with this, I reached out to Patrick Rothfuss from Neverwinter Nights fame. Well, he actually reached out to me, since Im a big Neverwinter Nights fan. When he was told about this article I sent out on the Neverwinter Nights community, he had a response:Hey Kevin,Ive read and enjoyed a few of your articles about RPGs and would like to put the record straight about where the term open-world RPG gets its name from. Ive seen a few open-world games released over the years, but those games were NOT RPGs. The open world of a game is simply a generic term used to describe games that allow for vast amounts of freedom in the form of freedom to explore and interact with the world. Many games try to capture this freedom by allowing the player to travel from one location to another, but those games are not RPGs. If a player is able to travel from place to place, the game is still not an RPG. Games which allow the player to travel from place to place that are often called sandboxes are RPGs because the game is still structured in a way that the player can experience the games story and its main gameplay elements through the use of the games world.
