Strictlys Tess Daly breaks down in tears over husband Vernon Kays milestone

Vernon Kay receives supportive phone call from parents

Strictly Come Dancing host Tess Daly was in tears over her mother-in-law’s tender message of support to Vernon Kay – and he was welling up too.

Vernon, who is best known for hosting Radio 2’s mid-morning show, is on the third day of a four-day marathon challenge – and he’ll be scaling the highest peak in the Peak District this afternoon.

Emotions ran high for proud wife Tess when she shared a video on Instagram of Vernon receiving a supportive phone call from his parents – and she admitted that she’d burst into tears too.

“All this love and support you’re getting is getting to me. I’m so, so proud. I’m welling up because you know how much you’re loved,” his mum Gladys told him as she phoned into his show.

“Keep going, love, because I know how you feel about Children in Need. I know that is the only reason you’re doing, for these children.

“Give my love to all those people around you who are keeping you standing up!” she added.

Tess shared the footage with her 849,000 Instagram followers, exclaiming in the caption: “Feeling so proud of @vernonkay. Gladys-you made me cry! Best mother in law in the world!”

She continued: “I want to say a massive heartfelt thank you to everyone that’s supported Vern so far, with messages, comments, and coming out on to the streets and cheering him on!”

Referring to the aches and twinges in his muscles after a 40 mile marathon, she added: “He’s been so overwhelmed at the response and as he said it ‘has helped make all the pain go away’!

“Thank you so SO much everyone, he’s raised over £1.2 million so far for Children In Need @bbcin and still 2 more days (and a lot more miles) to go!”

Addressing her husband personally, she added: “Go on Vern: I know you are feeling it now and today is probably the most challenging day; going up the highest peak in the Peak District! But am willing you to keep going. You’ve got this.

“If you can please show your support and donate to BBC Children in Need online at bbc.co.uk/vernon.”

Vernon, who kicked off his ultramarathon in Leicester on Tuesday, was inundated with support in the comments, with more than 7,000 fans rushing to hit the like button as they enthused over his efforts.
