Phillip Schofield claimed it was “a bit early” to be making the decision to give Anton Du Beke the role as the new Strictly Come Dancing judge. The presenter made the admission during an interview with Craig Revel Horwood earlier today on This Morning.

Phillip and Holly Willoughby were discussing the news Anton is stepping into Bruno Tonioli’s shoes on the show for the latest series.

Craig had opened up about how he was “super excited” Anton had joined the judging panel.

However, Phillip voiced some concerns over the decision that the Strictly bosses had made.

He asked the judge: “When are you going live for the first time?”

Craig then clarified: “We go live at the end of September.”

“So surely the travel will be sort of back to normal by then,” replied the This Morning host.

However, Craig was quick to point out how it is still “risky” to bank on it all being back to normal.

Phillip wouldn’t back down as he added: “It seems early to make that decision.”

Craig replied: “I think it had to be made in order to get the show on the road.

“You have to make decisions in advance and when it’s so up in the air and you’re juggling…

“There was a lot of juggling with Strictly last year and really it’s the best possible solution.”

Phillip then agreed how Anton will be a really great judge for the dancing competition.

Elsewhere, Anton has been flooded with support by Strictly stars after the news was announced.

The host of the show, Tess Daly, posted on Instagram: “Bruno we love you and we miss you.

“But biggest congrats to the one and only @MrAntonDuBeke on stepping in as new judge on series 19.”

Alongside her message, she also shared a snap of the pair backstage on the show.

Giovanni Pernice also weighed in on the news sharing a cute video of him and Anton on the street.

He can be heard calling him “the new judge of Strictly Come Dancing”.

Former Strictly dancer James Jordan penned on Twitter: “Congratulations to my mate @TheAntonDuBeke on becoming a judge on #strictly

“About b****y time!!”

Anton himself said of the news: “My loves I cannot tell you how thrilled I am to be stepping into Bruno’s brogues for the next series of Strictly.

“It’s a dream come true to be judging alongside the best of the best and I promise to be kinder to all the couples than any of them have ever been to me.”
