The finding could have broad public health implications, researchers said. The study, by researchers in China, found that those whose lungs were less full were more likely to die of lung cancer, COPD or pulmonary fibrosis. The team at Johns Hopkins University, in the US, cautioned that the result should not be extrapolated to all people in China. This study is very limited in that it is based on one health outcome – lung oxygenation Dr Paul Jie Qi, Chinese Academy of Preventive MedicineThe researchers used data on 9. 7 million Chinese in an effort to understand the relationship between air pollution and health. They found that those whose lungs were less full were more likely to die of lung cancer or other lung diseases. And, the more air pollution was measured, the more strongly the relationship held for cancer as well as respiratory diseases. The association is quite strong and its quite strong for lung cancer, said Dr Paul Jie Qi, medical director of the Chinese Academy of Preventive Medicine. He added: This study is very limited in that it is based on one health outcome – lung oxygenation. This is the outcome we were particularly interested in as this is the outcome of greatest urgency to prevent morbidity and mortality among smokers. The research showed that the more air pollution a patient had, the greater the risk of death. The researchers also said the results were not confined to people with heart disease. They said that a link existed between poor lung function and other lung diseases, such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease – COPD. They also said that respiratory diseases such as emphysema and chronic bronchitis, and lung cancer, also correlated with air pollution levels. A link was also found with other respiratory conditions, such as asthma. Image caption Many people living in China live in close proximity to pollutionThe air quality in China worsens during the winter, as smog settles in from northern countries. Many people in the city of Wukan, in the eastern region of Shandong, have long complained of breathing the toxic air. The Chinese Academy of Preventive Medicine said it would be studying the link between lung function and air.
