After receiving critical acclaim for her role as stern headmistress Miss Trunchbull in Matilda The Musical, Dame Emma Thompson has won acknowledgement for the Sophie Hyde directed Good Luck to You, Leo Grande, in which she plays a woman who is yet to experience an orgasm.

Richly deserved: Academy Award winner Olivia Colman is also in line for another accolade, this time Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture, Drama for her starring role in the Sam Mendes directed romantic drama Empire of Light

Success: Daisy Edgar-Jones wins recognition for Under The Banner Of Heaven with a nomination for Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role in a Limited Series, Anthology Series or Motion Picture Made for Television

Carey Mulligan’s performance in powerful Me Too drama She Said has won her a nomination for Best Supporting Actress – Motion Picture, where she will compete alongside Angela Bassett for Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, Kerry Condon for The Banshees of Inisherin, Jamie Lee Curtis for Everything Everywhere All At Once and Dolly De Leon for Triangle of Sadness.

Elsewhere Ralph Fiennes is named in the category for Best Actor – Motion Picture – Musical/Comedy courtesy of his role as fictional celebrity chef Julian Slowik in director Mark Mylod’s brooding drama The Menu.

Veteran star Bill Nighy’s starring role in Living – an adaptation of Japanese 1952 classic Ikiru – has earned him a nomination in the category for Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture – Drama.

Avatar: The Way of Water and Top Gun: Maverick were named among the contenders for Golden Globe awards next month when the ceremony returns to television after a year off following a diversity and ethics scandal.

Dark comedy film The Banshees of Inisherin led all movies with eight nominations on Monday from members of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, the group that hands out the Globes.

The Globes have been known as a glitzy, booze-fueled ceremony that kicks off Hollywood’s awards season and helps propel nominees and winners in their quest for Oscars.

But the event was tainted after a 2021 Los Angeles Times investigation probed the association’s practices and revealed the organization had no Black members. Tom Cruise returned his Golden Globe statues in protest, and longtime broadcaster NBC dropped the 2022 telecast.

The Comcast-owned network agreed to air the Globes again in 2023 after the organization made reforms. The ceremony will take place Jan. 10 and will also stream on Peacock.

In the mix: Lily James has received a well deserved nomination for Best Performance by an Actress in a Limited Series, Anthology Series, or a Motion Picture Made for Television courtesy of her role as Baywatch actress Pamela Anderson in Disney+ series Pam & Tommy (pictured left with co-star Sebastian Stan)

Up for it: After receiving critical acclaim for her role as stern headmistress Miss Trunchbull in Matilda The Musical, Dame Emma Thompson has won acknowledgement for the Sophie Hyde directed Good Luck to You, Leo Grande, in which she plays a woman who is yet to experience an orgasm

Last year Tom Cruise last year returned his three Golden Globes to the HFPA in protest at its behavior, and Fraser has said he will not attend the awards if he is nominated.

‘It’s because of the history that I have with them. And my mother didn’t raise a hypocrite,’ Fraser told GQ last month.

Fraser has alleged that a former HFPA president, Philip Berk, sexually assaulted him at an industry event in 2003. Berk denies the incident, and has since been expelled from the group for calling Black Lives Matter a ‘racist hate movement.’

In response to last year’s controversy, HFPA expanded its voting body to include people with more diverse backgrounds, banned members from accepting gifts, and halted its in-person press conferences with stars, which were often derided for the improper behavior of some members.

Getting involved: Carey Mulligan’s performance in Me Too drama She Said has won her a nomination for Best Supporting Actress – Motion Picture

And now for the main course: Ralph Fiennes is named in the category for Best Actor – Motion Picture – Musical/Comedy courtesy of his role as fictional celebrity chef Julian Slowik in director Mark Mylod’s The Menu

Head to head: But he will face stiff competition from Daniel Craig, who features in the same category after reprising his role as detective Benoit Blanc in Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery

‘This is really not the old HFPA anymore,’ president Helen Hoehne recently told The Hollywood Reporter.

‘I respect Brendan Fraser’s decision… And I personally, sincerely hope there’s a way for us to move forward and we are able to regain Mr Fraser’s trust, along with the trust of the entire entertainment community,’ she added.

Still, powerful Hollywood publicists remain divided over the Globes, with some expressing skepticism about the reforms — and a reluctance to return to the event with their stars.

A plan by US billionaire Todd Boehly, the new owner of English football club Chelsea, to spin off the awards show into a for-profit entity and pay salaries to members has raised eyebrows.
