Heres a look at how the gun laws compare among the states. Gun control: Where the law is the strongestThere hasnt been a mass shooting in the countrys 50 states since December 2012 – in the state of Oregon. There were three shootings the previous 12 months in Oregon, but no mass shootings since. The National Rifle Association is fighting back against the national calls for stricter gun laws by launching the Concealed Carry Reciprocity initiative. The NRA says states are violating the Second Amendment rights of citizens by making it more difficult to carry weapons without a license. CBS NewsConcealed carry reciprocity is a direct attack on the Constitution and the right, and the Constitution isnt a subject for debate, NRA spokesman Andrew Arulanandam told WKMG. Heres a look at how the laws are playing out right now:MassachusettsThe gun control discussion has taken on a special intensity following the Newtown, Conn mass shooting. The state has been one of the nations most aggressive in enacting new gun laws. I think as a first step, we should take guns out of the hands of people who have a history of mental illness and that are dangerous to themselves and to others, Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick said in a radio interview Thursday. Boston Mayor Thomas Menino has also called for gun laws to be tightened up. I think there are very few good people that own guns, Menino said on WGBH-TVs The Common Sense Show Wednesday. He suggested that those with mental issues may be looking for an easy way to obtain a weapon. Our challenge is, do we allow an evil to prevail that is so much greater than us, or do we step up and say no, well stop it, Menino said. In the year since the Newtown shooting, Massachusetts lawmakers have passed a few new gun control measures, including new background check requirements. California Attorney General Bill Lockyer says his state is the only one that requires a background check on every gun purchase and that the process is the most complicated in the country.
