Eamonn Holmes slams 'woke' ITV boss Carolyn McCall

‘They like a certain order, even if that order is corrupt’: Eamonn Holmes slams ‘woke’ ITV boss Carolyn McCall and says he was never given a reason for being axed from This Morning

  • Holmes agreed that those who question ITV’s ‘woke narrative’ are pushed out

Eamonn Holmes has blasted ‘woke ITV’ and claims stars who do not agree with the boss’s narrative are axed, adding executives never gave a reason for why he needed to step down from This Morning.

Holmes agreed with his fellow GB News presenter Dan Wootton who suggested that anyone who questions ITV’s ‘woke narrative’ is pushed out the door.

He alleged that ITV liked a ‘certain order, even if that order is corrupt’, suggesting that those presenters who went against their mandate, such as former presenters Jeremy Kyle and Piers Morgan, were removed while those like Phillip Schofield ‘were protected’.

It follows allegations made by Holmes yesterday that claimed ITV had known about Schofield’s ‘unwise, but not illegal’ affair with a younger male colleague, accusing the broadcaster of a ‘total cover up. He alleged ‘those in authority had to know’ because the man was ferried between Schofield’s £1million home and the studios in taxis ‘paid for by ITV’.

Tonight the former presenter of This Morning claimed he was ‘never given a reason’ by the ITV’s chief executive Dame Carolyn McCall as to why he was axed, adding that there did seem to be ‘a political element’ to his dismissal.

The veteran broadcaster, 63, and is wife Ruth Langsford were controversially removed from This Morning in November 2021 after 15 years of a service. They were replaced on the Friday show by Dermot O’Leary and Alison Hammond.

He claimed that ITV presenters like Phillip Schofield were ‘protected’. Schofield has sent the broadcaster into crisis after he admitted lying about an affair with a younger colleague

Schofield and his co-presenter of 14 years Holly Willoughby sat with his much younger former lover

He blamed ITV’s ‘wokery’ for the departure of a number of its former stars. This included Mr Kyle who left in 2019 following the death of guest Steven Dymond, and Mr Morgan who quit in March 2021 after a huge on-air row over comments he made about Meghan Markle.

Speaking to his fellow GB News presenter Dan Wootton tonight, Holmes said: ‘They like a certain order even if that order is corrupt doesn’t matter if they are bending the rules or breaking the rules, but as long as they instigate lockdown, then it’s their way or the highway.’

MailOnline has contacted ITV for a statement.

Holmes insisted that the head of ITV Daytime Emma Gormley, was ordered by Dame McCall ‘to get rid of’ him.

At the time, his removal from This Morning was said to be spurred on after he received backlash from questioning whether there was a link between 5G and coronavirus – a comment that was said to have infuriated ITV bosses.

The next day he was forced to issue an apology and the regulator Ofcom had to intervene.

Speaking of the matter tonight, Holmes said ‘I said you should be able to question the narrative about these things’.

Mr Wootton claimed the Duchess of Sussex ‘had a lot of influence’ on Dame McCall, alleging that the ITV boss had not ‘liked the fact’ that Holmes and Mr Morgan had criticised Ms Markle.

The Duchess made a complaint to Ofcom after Mr Morgan stated on Good Morning Britain that he ‘didn’t believe a word’ of her Oprah Winfrey interview, where she laid bare her struggles surrounding mental health.

Holmes said: ‘I think the way of dealing with Carolyn McCall and Megan Markle is to laugh at them and laugh at their wokery because they are humourless, they are all humourless.’

He added that the director of television Kevin Lygo ‘stays silent of everything’ and ‘should not be allowed to’.

The interview comes as ongoing crisis continues to swirl around the broadcaster after Schofield admitted on Friday that he had lied to the station, his lawyers, his talent agency and co-star of 14 years about his relationship with a much younger colleague.

It has plunged ITV into meltdown, resulting in millions of pounds being lost on a This Morning sponsorship deal.

Last night, Holmes made more allegations, accusing that ‘those in authority’ at ITV ‘had to know’ about Schofield’s affair as the young man was ferried between Schofield’s £1million west London flat to the White City studio in taxis ‘paid for by ITV’.

Schofield and his young lover leave the Ivy Club in London in the early hours of Friday March 23, 2017. Holmes claimed yesterday that Thursday nights were ‘playtime’ for them

Schofield, 61, does not take part in the conversation but is seen vaping nearby accompanied by his wife, Stephanie Lowe

He accused those in charge of a ‘total cover up’ of the affair in which Schofield branded ‘unwise but not illegal’.

Holmes said yesterday: ‘Thursday was playtime when he and Phillip would hit the town and then he obviously stayed overnight. There are records to show that he was brought in the next day separately in cars paid for by ITV.’

The ongoing blasts to ITV tonight come as the Daily Mail revealed that Schofield’s former lover had received a financial settlement from the broadcaster.

ITV has repeatedly declined to comment on the alleged pay-off or deny it. The former presenter’s representatives also made no comments.

A source, however, has claimed that a sum of money was handed over to the young man, after he declared his love for Schofield and at the National Television Awards in 2020. Soon after, he was shunned to another of the network’s daytime programme.

Timeline of the Phillip Schofield scandal

September 2022 – Schofield and Willoughby are criticised for failing to queue for the Queen’s Lying in State.

April 2023 – Phillip is absent from This Morning for two weeks while his brother Timothy, 54, is tried at Exeter Crown Court for sexually abusing a teenage boy.

April 3 – Timothy is found guilty of  ’emotionally blackmailing’ the teenager into performing sex acts and watching porn with him.

May 10 – Reports emerge Phillip and Holly are ‘barely speaking’, but a day later he issues a statement calling Holly ‘my rock’.

May 15 – The pair present a united front while presenting This Morning, but rumours of a feud continue. The pair are said to have fallen out due to Phillip’s failure to warn Holly of his brother’s trial.

May 20 – Schofield announces he is stepping down from This Morning with ‘immediate effect’.

May 22 – Stand-in presenters Dermot O’Leary and Alison Hammond pay tribute to their former colleague as ‘one of the best live television broadcasters this country has ever had’.

May 26 – Schofield releases a statement admitting he’d had an affair with a ‘much younger’ colleague but then lied about it.

May 27 – Holly blasts Phillip for lying to her.

May 28 – This Morning’s former resident doctor Dr Ranj Singh hits out at the show’s ‘toxic’ culture.

May 29 – Schofield releases a statement denying claims the show had a toxic culture, only for Eamonn Holmes to slam him as ‘delusional’ on Twitter.

Holmes later takes to GB News accusing ITV of a ‘total cover up’ of Schofield’s affair.

Insiders at ITV said bosses must have known about the any payments made as it would have been signed off by someone more senior.

One said: ‘There have been numerous pay-offs at ITV and they have always had to be arranged and sanctioned by people of some seniority.’

The claims come as pressure is increasing on the Dame McCall, Mr Lygo and Ms Gormley to speak about what they knew.

ITV has continued to insist that it carried out an investigation in 2020 after rumours of Schofield’s affair with a younger male employee began to circulate. But sources close to Schofield’s former lover said he was never quizzed on the matter.

Schofield reportedly met his future lover while he was at stage school in 2012. In 2016, he was around 18 or 19, he landed a job on This Morning.

Today an extraordinary Snapchat video shows the former broadcaster partying with the young man 34 years his junior and his best friend Simon Schofield.

In the clip from March 2017, Schofield begins by sharing a snap of his pint of beer before dragging on a shisha. He then giggles: ‘I can’t get a tune out of these bagpipes’.

In the shisha video the young man is believed to be around 20 while Schofield was 55. It is thought they were in a relationship at the time the video was recorded.

A series of photos were also released today showing the night that the young man reportedly declared his love for Schofield, according to former ITV producer Cristo Foufas.

Pictures show the young man giving his co-host Holly Willoughby, 42, a kiss on the cheek at the National Television Awards (NTAs) at the O2 Arena in 2020.

Mr Foufas described an ‘incident’ at the awards on January 28, 2020 when Schofield’s lover stunned his colleagues by ‘declaring his love for Phil’.

The photos show the man approaching Holly and her husband Daniel Baldwin, sharing a few words, before jumping in a waiting cab.

Schofield does not take part in the conversation and is seen vaping nearby with his then wife Stephanie Lowe.

Mr Foufas told the Jeremy Vine show today: ‘I was a producer at ITV Daytime during the period where this was all taking place,’ he told the Jeremy Vine Show.

‘It was known among the production staff and people lower down the food chain what was going on. Everyone knew that he was with Phillip.’
