Christine Lampard talks festive season plans: I think my clubbing days are over!

If Christmas is all about cheer, we can see why Christine Lampard is the poster girl for the season. The presenter, 44, is all smiles as she sits down to talk to us about returning as No7’s Christmas gifting ambassador, joking, “Does that make me Mrs Claus?”

To her children – Patricia, five, and two-year-old Freddie – we imagine it does. Loose Women star Christine, who is married to football legend Frank, says Christmas is big in their household, and that this year she’ll be making it more magical than ever. The couple will celebrate their eighth wedding anniversary in December – though she says it will be a low-key occasion and she’d rather spend quality time with her husband than be spoiled with lavish presents.

Here, we chat to Christine about spreading the festive cheer, her very unconventional timesaving beauty hack and the one item she’d bring into the I’m A Celeb jungle…

Hey, Christine! Is it too early to say Merry Christmas?

No, we go early on Christmas! I’m always early on the Christmas tree.

So your family are big fans of the festive season then?

I love it, naturally, and my children are also at an age where they now really get it. They’re excited and I kind of want to just elongate that lovely experience for as long as possible. I’ll do the OTT tacky, blow-up Santa in the garden and stuff like that. I’ll definitely push the boat out.

Are we right in thinking your wedding anniversary is around Christmas, too?

It’s the 20th of December, so we’ll definitely celebrate around then, even if it’s just a dinner. We’re eight years married this year and just the other day my sister said, ‘Do you think you’ll do a big party on your 10th anniversary?’ We don’t do parties, but it could be more of a Christmas thing.

Do you combine Christmas and anniversary gifts?

I don’t stress too much about anniversary gifts – Christmas is definitely number one. For our anniversary, I’m happy just to be able to go out for dinner and have a lovely meal somewhere. I’m very simple when it comes to that – I don’t need big fancy gifts or attention. I think it’s just nice to think, “OK, eight years on and we’re here, we’re doing good.”

Going back to Christmas, what can we expect from No7’s gifting range this year?

There are so many choices for all budgets, but the Protect & Perfect Collection is a banker for skincare, and the Future Renew Collection has four anti-ageing skincare heroes. The Limited Edition Starry Nights lipsticks are also top-selling in Boots right now.

What’s your go-to make-up look for the festive season?

I like going a bit smokier and darker on my eyes for a party, but I mostly don’t go too far out of my comfort zone. Most mornings I just put a bit of mascara on and a little bit of concealer. I do love experimenting with make-up though.

Rumour has it you’re pretty skilled with a make-up brush…

Well, I did my best friend’s make-up for her wedding. Make-up has always been a passion of mine – it’s probably a job I would have liked to have done, if I’m honest. I was on the Loose Women tour recently and I did my own make-up – and I loved it. I just think it’s 10-15 minutes of calm, and it’s so nice to play around with products.

Does Patricia show any interest in your make-up bag yet?

She’s utterly obsessed with my make-up bag, as is my boy. He just thinks it’s all great fun – another version of colouring in. My little girl will say, “Mummy, can I try your lipstick?” And if she’s a little bit dressed up, and if we’re going out, say, for a Sunday lunch, she’ll ask for eyeshadow. I’ll sort of touch her with my brush so she thinks it’s on!

Has your skincare regime changed now you’re in your forties?

I definitely now try not to be lazy with my skincare. I’m still slightly lazy, but I do always aim for the whole cleansing thing. There have been quite a few nights where a towel goes over my pillowcase. I’m still that person, but generally, I do give my face a good wash and then I use a good moisturiser.

A towel over a pillowcase wasn’t the beauty hack we were expecting from you!

If I’m really lazy, or if I’ve had one too many glasses of wine, the towel might not even happen, but I tend to try to save myself having to wash the pillowcase!

Any other beauty tips, unconventional or otherwise, to share?

It’s just the power of mascara for me. I look like I’m still asleep if I haven’t got it on, so I could get by with just that. If I had to go into the I’m A Celeb jungle and I had one thing I could bring with me, it would be mascara.

Are you planning on getting glammed up for NYE?

I definitely used to. Back home [in Northern Ireland], New Year’s Eve is massive and we’d go out. Now, with children, it’s very different. We’ll make an event of it, but I think my clubbing days are out of the window now!

And resolutions – will you make any for 2024?

I try not to go down the “I must do this” route. I’m not going to get fit. I spend all year saying those kinds of things, and it never happens. It’s more about taking a moment to take stock and be grateful for the good things.

We won’t see you on the treadmill in January then?

I’m not a great gym person. I walk the dog and I’m very active with the children, and that does me. I think, “What’s the point?” Promising to go is just another pressure on yourself that you probably won’t manage to fulfil.
