Trouble: Chris Rock’s may have landed himself in hot water with Oscar bosses as his joke about Jada Pinkett Smith was reportedly unvetted before the live show
While on stage, Chris said: ‘Jada, GI Jane 2, I can’t wait to see it’, which prompted Will to step on stage and slap him before he shouted: ‘Keep my wife’s name out your f******g mouth’.
Jada has been open about her struggle with hair loss due to alopecia. In December she posted a video where she pointed out a patch of baldness.
‘Now at this point, I can only laugh. Y’all know I’ve been struggling with alopecia and just all of a sudden one day, look at this line right here,’ she said in the Instagram clip.
‘Now this is going to be a little bit more difficult for me to hide, so I thought I’d just share it so y’all not asking any questions — but you know, mama’s going to put some rhinestones in there, and I’m going to make me a little crown.’
Smack: The comedian was slapped in the face by Jada’s husband Will after he stormed on stage when Chris jokingly compared her haircut to G.I. Jane
Awkward: Will initially laughed at the gag Chris made about Jada’s (right) short haircut. But Jada, who has struggled with hair loss after revealing her diagnosis with alopecia in 2018, rolled her eyes at the comment
Confrontation: Will, visibly emotional, walked back to his seat in the audience and shouted: ‘Keep my wife’s name out of your f***ing mouth’
Jada captioned the social media upload, ‘Mama’s gonna have to take it down to the scalp so nobody thinks she got brain surgery or something.Me and this alopecia are going to be friends … period!’
MailOnline has contacted representatives for the Academy Awards for comment.
The exchange was muted on a delayed telecast in much of the US, but was aired in full to some international audiences.
Will was still allowed to make his acceptance speech and, with tears streaming down his face, he appeared to defend hitting Chris because he said he wanted to protect his family.

WHAT IS ALOPECIA?
Alopecia, which causes baldness, is thought to be an autoimmune disorder. The immune system – the body’s defense system – turns on itself.
What are the symptoms?
‘Typically, one or more small bald patches, about the size of a 50p piece, appear on the scalp. The hair can start to regrow at one site, while another bald patch develops. Hair may also begin to thin all over the head,’ says Marilyn Sherlock, chairman of the Institute of Trichologists.
What causes it?
‘For some reason, the body’s immune system begins to attack its own hair follicles. Special white blood cells in the body, known as T-lymphocytes, cause the hair to stop growing,’ she adds.
Can worry make it worse?
Stress has been shown to prolong the problem.
Is it an inherited condition?
There is strong evidence to suggest that alopecia, like other auto-immune diseases, runs in families. About 25 per cent of patients have a family history of the disorder.
Who gets it?
Alopecia areata usually affects teenagers and young adults, but it can affect people of any age. It is just as common among men as women.
Is there a cure?
There is no known cure, although there are various treatments which may be effective for some people.
‘Love makes you do crazy things’, the rapper admitted as he accepted his Best Actor Oscar statuette.
He added that being a Hollywood star means you should be able to ‘have people disrespecting you and that ‘you just gotta smile and pretend it’s ok,’ he said.
But he added that he admired Richard Williams who ‘was a fierce defender of his family.’
‘I’m being called on in my life to love people and to protect people and to be a river to my people,’ he explained.
Speech: Will used his acceptance speech for his first Academy Award to defend storming onto the Oscars stage and slapping Chris
Will went on to issue a tearful partial apology for his emotional outburst, but did not apologize to Chris.
‘I want to apologize to the Academy, I want to apologize to all my fellow nominees. This is a beautiful moment,’ he said.
‘Art imitates life. I look like the crazy father.’
Late on Sunday, the LAPD issued a statement saying that Chris had not filed a police report against Will, but that if he chooses to do so, police will investigate.
