The Sioux have always been considered brave and warlike. Although I never had the chance to meet any of them, I was very impressed with their strength of character and the determination to preserve their way of life, despite persecution and oppression. In the 19th century, the United States government began to try to assimilate its Indian population. One major goal was to remove their language from the governments books and replace it with English. This occurred in 1907 and 1908 and resulted in the destruction of many books and the loss of many Native American languages, including Sioux. The Sioux language was used by the Lakota in the reservation community of Rapid City, South Dakota. The Lakota in their language, Yankton Sioux, have a very complex meaning for words that have only about 20 meanings. Before World War II, the federal government tried to suppress the language by placing it in the English language in a way that would ensure that Yankton Sioux would not be able to hear it. One method of doing so was to place Cultural Propertynames, terms, expressions, etc. Then they would have to take the word, change it slightly, and put it back into Lakota language. This was done to avoid confusion among students because in the Lakota language, there are a lot of meanings for words that are in the official version of English. To this day, the official language of Rapid City is English, which is not even a translation of the Lakota language.
