At the time of this writing, the list reads like a Whos Who of the entertainment world: Oprah, Elton John, Madonna, Tom Cruise, Elton John, Leonardo DiCaprio, Justin Timberlake, David Bowie, Bruce Willis, Michael Clarke Duncan, and more. Each has been linked via the Dalai Lama to their respective faiths. In recent years, a few big names have decided to go fully secular. Actor Gene Hackman came out as atheist in 2008. Actress Sally Field has made the same declaration as atheist author Richard Dawkins. And recently, one of the most famous actresses to be mentioned in Buddhist circles has gone completely mainstream: Gwyneth Paltrow. In an interview with ABC, Paltrow told reporter Liz Szabo that she is not a devout Buddhist, but says being a Buddhist has had a benefit. Its helped me through really dark times in my life, Paltrow said. Its helped my relationships with the people that I love and its helped me through times of depression. Paltrow added that she uses meditation during times of grief. Paltrow, who has raised a child as a single mother, is a devout atheist. She said she grew up in a small town where religion was never discussed and that it is only recently that she has begun to think about her upbringing. I just think its so interesting that we think in such linear terms as being religious or not religious, but it seems to me that were really not aware of our life-paths, Paltrow said. Paltrow made her movie The Blind Side, which features Christian Bale as a devout atheist man, based on an incident in which her character found a note describing how a Christian minister in her town had helped a homeless man in need. I couldnt let it go, so I went back to visit this man and we had a wonderful conversation, Paltrow said. Paltrow says she believes Buddhism is the true religion of her family and that Christianity, Islam, Judaism, Hinduism and other religions have all been co-opted. She is open to any other religion, however, which would include Hinduism. You can watch the ABC interview here. The Dalai Lama is a practicing Buddhist, but he is also a leader of a worldwide religious movement that has more than 8 million followers, many of whom are in Hollywood.
