The most recent diet plan from the City of Vancouver has some important recommendations for the public. See my blog here, The citys nutritionist, Dr. Leslie Walford, recently presented a new plan for the citys diet, which she said will be better for both the environment and public health. The plan includes a reduction in the amount of meat consumed in favour of lower fat and lower calorie options. The plan does not aim to be more health-conscious today. Rather, it is looking at how we can move forward with our sustainability goals. For example, this plan is just as relevant for the second half of this decade. The city has established a committee to research the best methods to improve our diets, something that is already underway. The committee will continue to evaluate the current options to see which ones will meet the most sustainability goals and which should be scaled back. The city will also be increasing the variety of options that are available to us and will promote more local produce and more healthy food options. The citys Department of the Environment has also launched a program called Meatless Mondays, which is a campaign to encourage people to be more vegetarian or vegan. It is estimated that by 2050, the number of vegetarian commuters is projected to double. As a result, the departments research into sustainability is also being expanded to include sustainable diets in the future. The citys public health, environment and transportation departments are all involved in this process because they all deal with a lot of the same issues, and the changes are important for their goals. One of the major areas that was the most studied is what we will eat tomorrow. Reducing or eliminating the use of all trans fats. Replacing white sugar, white flour, high fructose corn syrup and other refined carbs with fruits and vegetables. One of the main concerns that the study identified was that people who did not eat meat were more likely to be overweight than those who did, which in turn would put more pressure on the resources needed to provide health care services in the future. We know that the population at large is not going to go completely vegetarian, but if we can get people who otherwise wouldnt give much thought to their diets to start doing so, its.
