NIDA for Teens The Science Behind Drug Abuse. NIDA, National Institute on Drug Abuse, is the worlds leading research institution devoted to the science of drugs and abuse. Founded in 1970 as a division of the Office of National Drug Control Policy, ONDCP NIDA works with other government agencies, non-governmental organizations, and the private sector to reduce the harm from drug abuse and alcoholism, to educate the public about the dangers of drug abuse, and to develop new prevention and intervention strategies that protect youth and others from drug abuse and alcohol abuse. The Drug Abuse Warning Network, DAWN, is an interactive national telephone hotline operated by The National Institute on Drug Abuse. The hotline provides drug users with the chance to make anonymous tips on possible drug-related crimes and to receive drug preventive advice. It also provides a confidential place where anyone may call for help in dealing with problems from drug use and abuse.
