By 1974, the groups reputation had grown to the point of even being invited to perform at a Country Music Association event, where they met the likes of John Mellencamp, Dolly Parton, George Strait, and the Carter Family, the late Frank Sinatras son and Johnny Cashs daughterIn January of 1975, the group recorded their first album under the name the Southern Sound, which brought the group some recognition. Their music began to catch the attention of Capitol Records, which at the time was trying to capitalize on a musical trend that was developing called Southern Rock – a style that emphasized rockabilly guitar licks, Southern rock and roll music, and blues influenced rhythms and lyrics. The word rock in this context was probably a bit of a misnomer for they werent even making rock and roll So in February of 1975, Capitol released the first album by the band known as The Southern Sound – a name they chose after the name of their hometown. The album sold well and was well-received, to the point that the group formed another group, the one that would become Lunar Base, and recorded two further albums under the same name, in 1978 and 1979. In 1979, Moon Unit, the band headed by guitarist Bob Seger and bassist John Scofield, released their second album, and also made their big break thanks to the influence of Southern Rock. Although their name was still Southern Sound, they were now known as Moonlight. By this time, the band were also featuring singersongwriter John.
